Think fast: What do Jewel and Djimon Hounsou have in common? Give up? They were both, at one point in their lives, homeless. Jewel famously talked about living out of her car for a while before making it big in the music industry. While Djimon was homeless on the streets of Paris as a young man. He was actually discovered while he was homeless and scouted randomly to be a fashion model. Talk about a Cinderella story....
In all seriousness, homelessness is something that most people probably don't realize they're about a paycheck or two away from. Lots of people live paycheck to paycheck and with this recession hitting the US the way it is, someone YOU know (or you yourself) could lose his or her job and end up in the same kind of misfortune. So I've got to commend Djimon for testifying before the U.S. Senate on the issue of homelessness. When people are stripped away of the basic necessities such as food and shelter, we realize how vulnerable we are.
Check out pics of Djimon testifying before the Senate and some shots of him and his new boo, Kimora Lee at the "Never Back Down" premiere.
