Yowza! This isn't good. Justin Timberlake's acting career is going the way of Madonna's. None of his films have done great at the box office and his most high-profile gig, "The Love Guru," just bombed catastrophically. "The Love Guru" took in an underwhelming $14 million in ticket sales in its debut weekend. Not even the enticing image of Justin Timberlake in a Speedo was enough to draw crowds.
To be fair, the blame for "The Love Guru"'s flop can hardly be foisted solely on Timberlake's shoulders. Mike Myers, the film's star, writer and producer, shoulders most of the blame for the lame jokes and the unfunny persona. Frankly, looking at the movie trailers alone, "The Love Guru" looked dead in the water to begin with. Also, Jessica Alba is in the movie. If Timberlake is box office poison, Alba is a box office atom bomb. She'll decimate any chance of success and acclaim. Except for "Sin City." But all she had to do in that movie was play a stripper anyway.
The critics predicted that "The Love Guru" would tank and the reviews for the film were atrocious. Just watch this comparison of "Get Smart," the Steve Carell flick that opened this past weekend alongside 'Guru,' from the LA Times movie reviewer Tom O'Neil. He doesn't hold back on the 'Guru' at all, calling it "the worst movie of the year by far." Ouch!
