This is not a game for Lady Gaga. The breakout star of 2009 is taking her role as an art-pop entertainer oh so seriously and she's making the rest of these chicks look bad. Every piece of her performance goes the extra mile. Especially her wardrobe. In the "Bad Romance" video alone, Gaga dons an astonishing 10 outfits in the five minutes that she crawls, thrashes and prances her way through domination of your mind and soul.
The concept of the video is, like "Paparazzi," very cinematic and story-driven. Gaga and her "little monsters" are reborn out of these life pods and donned in white latex bodysuits with crowns and armed with "Thriller"-inspired choreography, Gaga sings about a love that is so sick and twisted, and yet inexplicably irresistible. She ends up being kidnapped by a group of supermodels who drug and abuse her. After being initiated and dolled up, Gaga is then presented to the Russian mafia for sale into the sex slave trade. But Gaga's nobody's fool and in the end, she gets her revenge on her slave master.

This video, without a doubt, is a milestone in Lady Gaga's career. The masses adore it; in one day alone, the video has already notched over one million views. The commentary made over and over about the video is, "Wow. You can tell she REALLY put thought into this video. She's passionate about her art." And it's true. What you see missing from so many other pop stars is any semblance of passion or independent thought. Their minds operate on stand-by while their record label honchos do all the driving. Not so with Lady Gaga, who is eager to inspire, titillate and innovate the pop music landscape.
Some might criticize Lady Gaga for her extravagance. She's certainly not an artist for those who prefer the low-key and the understated. The "Bad Romance" video is so over-the-top that it looks like the pages of Vogue, Elle and W Magazine stuck a finger down their throats and vomited all over YouTube. But simplicity is overrated sometimes, and in these depressing economic times, there's nothing wrong with distracting ourselves with the glitz and glam. Rock on, Lady Gaga.
