This time, Christina's not gonna take the bait. In 2008, when Lady Gaga was an up and comer in the pop music world, Christina Aguilera dismissed Lady Gaga as a nobody who she wasn't sure was male or female. The blogs took the catty comment likes sharks to blood in the water and the respective stans for each singer have been waging war ever since.
Though the battle lines between the two ladies' fan bases aren't likely to be redrawn anytime soon, Christina isn't feeding into the rivalry through the press this time. In interviews with radio stations promoting her new single "Not Myself Tonight," the Lady Gaga comparisons were raised and Christina quickly swatted them down as nonsense. Source: MTV.com
"No rip-offs, we're all inspired by different things. I was inspired ... by artists that came before me. ... You know what I love about the new breed of newcomers is that they're risk takers. They're doing things that aren't so safe. ... I always had the guts and passion to do things like that. ... I'm happy to see that people have come full-circle and are now accepting it and are into it and these girls have the guts to do it."
What a well-played and diplomatic response. Lady Gaga is likely relieved, since she's already got M.I.A. and Grace Jones throat kicking her in the press. And Christina realizes that the little sprout Gaga she pissed on two years is not the pop powerhouse Gaga in 2010. Their audiences and fan bases overlap and digging in on Gaga would likely alienate many of her more casual fans. But it sure would make for good bloggin'.
